Marek Hamsik admits Napoli are practically out of the Europa League after a 3-1 home defeat to RB Leipzig. “It’s not the usual Napoli.”

Adam Ounas had given the Partenopei the lead with his angled drive, but shoddy defending and counter-attacks saw them crumble.

“It’s a pity, because with 2-1 we still could’ve turned it around, but needing a 3-0 win in Germany it now becomes very difficult indeed,” the captain told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s a pity, because with 2-1 we still could’ve turned it around, but needing a 3-0 win in Germany it now becomes very difficult indeed,” the captain told Sky Sport Italia.

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy and had taken the lead, so we certainly should’ve controlled the situation better. Conceding three goals at home in Europe over 90 minutes is not good, but it’s not the Napoli we usually see.”

The Partenopei and their fans have made absolutely no secret of the fact they see the Europa League as an inconvenience and want to put all their focus on the Scudetto.

“We need to grow in terms of character when it comes to facing every game with the same attitude. We are competitive and put in incredible performances in Italy, so we have to replicate that approach in the Champions League and Europa League.

“It is also different playing in front of 40,000 compared to 15,000, especially when so many of them were German fans. It still shouldn’t affect us, as we are in a European tournament.”
