Marek Hamsik insists he will have nothing to say to Simone Verdi when Napoli face Bologna this weekend as “the San Paolo will take care of him.”

The two sides lock horns on Sunday, with Verdi having just turned down a move to Napoli, but Hamsik was focused on merely “consolidating first place” in Serie A.

“It still hasn’t sunk in that I’ve overtaken Maradona,” the midfielder said at the club’s museum.

“Everyone’s told me that I have. It’s a wonderful thing to be part of the history of Napoli. I’ll leave the shirt [worn when breaking Maradona’s scoring record] here until the end of February, then I’ll take it back!

“There’s room for more in this trophy cabinet. Transfers? I don’t know what the club will do, the squad is already big and those involved have always done very well.

“We’re ready to go all the way this season, and it was seen against Atalanta in Bergamo.

“The next four games are part of a mini-cycle for the Scudetto. It’s time to hit the gas. We want to do well at the San Paolo:

“We’ll be in front of 50,000 fans on Sunday, and we can’t wait to consolidate first place on the pitch.

“Anything to tell Verdi? No. The San Paolo will take care of him. Mertens’ goal drought? No, he’s been making lots of assists.

“However, it’s certainly a good thing if he goes back to rippling the net. He’ll give us a big hand if he does.”
