Borussia Dortmund have announced that striker Sebastien Haller has been diagnosed with a testicular tumour, but unlike Italy international Francesco Acerbi, it was not spotted during a medical.

Haller felt unwell during the pre-season training camp just days after his €31m transfer from Ajax to Dortmund.

The 28-year-old Ivory Coast international flew back to Germany and underwent tests that allowed medics to diagnose a testicular tumour.

This is not new in the world of football, as Italy international Acerbi was diagnosed the first time in during his pre-season medical with Sassuolo in July 2013.

The doctors spotted some irregularities in the blood tests and requested further examinations, which found the tumour.

He had surgery to remove the tumour in Milan and was able to be back playing again on September 15, 2013.

However, the cancer returned in December 2013 and this time was diagnosed thanks to a failed doping test, which showed unusually high levels of a hormone.

The hormone imbalance was caused by the testicular tumour, so Acerbi sat out the rest of the season to undergo treatment including chemotherapy, returning in the summer of 2014.

Acerbi went on to have a strong Serie A and international career and is currently playing for Lazio, aged 34.
