Diego Godin says Juventus could follow in Atletico Madrid’s footsteps, but that it would not be so much of a surprise.

Los Colchoneros reached the final of the Champions League last season against the odds and, ahead of hosting the Bianconeri, one of their talismanic defenders was asked what chance of the Italians following in their footsteps this term.

“Maybe, though they would not be a surprise – they are a great team with a great history,” Godin has told La Stampe today.

“They come from three League titles won and they are competitive in the Champions League.

“What has been Atletico’s secret? [Pointing to his chest] The heart, the will to win, and you see that when we play at the Calderon. And then there is the work, every day.

“In the Champions League it was tough to fall at the final. Yes, we are proud, as it was 40 years since Atletico last reached the Final.

“We had just won La Liga and within a week we felt the other side of the coin.

“Simeone told us that he was sorry for us, but that we should be proud of what we did and to have worked every day to get to the Final. These, he said, are the things that will remain. He was right.”

Godin was asked of the chances of scoring past Gigi Buffon again tomorrow evening, having done so for Uruguay at the World Cup to eliminate Italy.

“I don’t know if I will score, I certainly hope so, but it is more important for us to win this game – it is too important.

“Allegri says it is a fundamental game? For us, certainly it is. Vital – we play against a tough opponent, we have already lost in Greece and if we are to move forward then we have to win here, at our stadium.

“Facing Carlos Tevez? He is uncomfortable, very much so. He is competitive, with determination and desire to win, always.”
