The Viola have been linked with Guangzhou Evergrande striker in recent days, with him reportedly set to decide today whether to return to Florence.

Delio Rossi was Coach at the Artemio Franchi when Gilardino left, and despite praising the Italian international, the tactician has doubts about whether he can play with Mario Gomez.

“If he [Gilardino] comes back to wear the Fiorentina shirt it will be a source of pride for everyone,” Rossi told Firenzeviola.

“I, personally, would be really happy to see him wear those colours. Gilardino knows our League and the Fiorentina fans, all the conditions to succeed are there. There’s still one doubt though.

“Fiorentina already have Gomez, who, like Gilardino is an out-and-out striker. I don’t know what the Viola’s plans are, but I think Gomez and Gilardino are two very similar strikers.

“With the two of them on the field, the Viola’s game will be one dimensional. In my opinion, therefore, one excludes the other.

“It seems very strange that the former Parma man would come in and take Gomez’s place, since it was only two summers ago that Fiorentina invested very heavily to bring the German to Florence.

“At the same time, Giardino is not a rookie and if he comes to Florence he’d be sure to want a starting shirt.”
