Sampdoria Coach Marco Giampaolo was more disappointed at losing Dennis Praet to a “serious injury” than conceding a late equaliser to Roma.

Edin Dzeko’s header in stoppages cancelled out a Fabio Quagliarella penalty in the 1-1 stalemate, rescheduled from September 9.

“We put in a great performance with real quality and it’s a shame we dropped two points at the end. We could’ve done better, but paid the price for some errors,” Giampaolo told Mediaset Premium.

“We weren’t sharp enough to get the second goal and I also had to deal with some injuries that were unexpected. It’s a real shame we lost Praet, a great player who gives us so much quality. I think it’s a serious injury and we’ll have to see how to go forward without him for a while.”

Praet pulled up clutching the back of his thigh after over-stretching and had to be helped off the field by medical staff.

“Quagliarella’s muscular problem doesn’t seem to be serious, as he felt a twinge and stopped in time. That is always a risk when playing three games in a week.

“I am happy with my team’s performance so far this season, although we ought to get more points on our travels. We don’t play with the same conviction and character as we do at Marassi.

“I had noticed recently that the team felt the responsibility of being so high up the table and had lost some of the joy in its game, but that is essential for us.

“Our ambition is to play good football, to be leaders and decide our own fate. It’s a lofty aim and at times it does work.”
