On from netting in his country’s final warm-up game against El Salvador, Gervinho has outlined that advancements to the knockout stages is an objective.

“We are in Brazil in good physical shape and a healthy state of mind,” the 27-year-old has told reporters this week from The Elephants’ training base in Aguas de Lindoia.

“I’m not going to make any predictions but each of us is prepared and fully aware of what is expected. That is to say, to get through the first round.

“But, we have to play three games that are anything but simple. And we have to play them all with determination, but I believe that qualification is an achievable goal.

“In a tournament like the World Cup, it is always important to win the first game.”

Gervinho considered his own form going into the tournament and how he may be Ivory Coast’s leading figure on the pitch.

“While it is true that at times, the individual can make the difference, the fans can rest assured that I will contribute to the team first in each game we play.

“In this team the objectives of the Elephants is top priority. To play by myself, would be meaningless and unproductive.

“My season? I can call it a very good season because we achieved our goal of a Champions League place. Everyone was very pleased with the team.

“I already knew the Coach and I enjoyed his confidence. Therefore I quickly integrated with the rest of the squad.”
