Interviewed by Il Corriere dello Sport, Gentile said: "I read my name, I hear it on the TV, but I guarantee that there hasn't been any contact. And as a loyal supporter I hope that the team can resolve its problems without sudden changes.

"I couldn't say 'no' to Juve. If the opportunity were to present itself, I really would like the chance to return. But no one has contacted me yet. Instead last year they did.

"The team was in crisis and the club thought about me when replacing Ciro Ferrara. We sat around a table but without reaching an agreement. And then they chose Alberto Zaccheroni.

"The affection of the fans is the thing that gives me the most pleasure. If the love of the fans resists time, it means that the qualities recognised in you are not simply based in football."
