The Rossoblu, who face Siena on Saturday, are without the suspended Kakha Kaladze and the injured Dario Dainelli.
To complicate matters further, the under-pressure Malesani may now also be missing summer signing Cesare Bovo.
The 28-year-old, who arrived on loan from Palermo before this season started, has played in just five Serie A ties this term.
Malesani is now expected to play full-back Emiliano Moretti in the middle, as well as possibly using midfielder Marco Rossi in defence.
