Both players reportedly wanted the iconic number for their back going into 2012-13 and in the presence of captain Marco Rossi and team manager Francesco Bega, both put forward blind bids to settle the argument.

Merkel, a returning signing this summer from Milan, won with his offer and will now wear the No 10 for the coming season, with Jorquera continuing to pull on the No 19. The money from their bids was donated to charity.

Elsewhere, Alberto Gilardino has moved to the No 9 shirt and Davide Biondini to No 8, Cesare Bovo asked for No 3, Ciro Immobile takes No 17, Luca Antonelli opted for No 13, whilst Ze Eduardo has moved to No 57, to mark the year of the birth of his parents.

Argentine signing Julian Velazquez has been delayed in joining up with the squad due to an issue with paperwork, and is currently unassigned a number until his arrival later this week.
