The Coach spoke at a Press conference after Friday evening’s 3-0 victory over Empoli, a result that put them within a point of third-placed Inter, awaiting the Nerazzurri’s trip to Fiorentina.

When asked if the Rossoneri were setting their sights firmly on third, Gattuso called the question “laughable. We’re not even thinking about Inter.

“I would gladly take the deal if you told me Inter would finish third and Milan fourth. I’d take that deal with a signature as big as San Siro.”

The top four go into the Champions League group phase next season, so third or fourth would make little difference to the city rivals.

Milan certainly seem to have the momentum and a lot of that is down to Piatek, who has scored seven goals in his last five games between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

“Piatek has settled in very well and works hard, but he’s not a player who stands out in training. He looks after himself, but doesn’t do that much. He is far more practical, focuses on the important things and likes to test out the movements two or three days before a game.

“Piatek is very interested in research and comes to ask the staff about the characteristics of the opposition defenders.”

Full-back Andrea Conti had his first start since August 2017, having finally shaken off those knee injuries, and provided an assist in the 3-0 win over Empoli.

“Don’t forget the club paid €25m for him before the injury and he is slowly getting back to his best. He is Milan’s heritage, but can improve a great deal in his defending.”
