Gennaro Gattuso described the new Milan formation after a 3-2 victory. “You can’t beat Sampdoria only with grit.”

The Coach moved to a 4-4-2 system after back-to-back defeats against Inter and Real Betis, mostly so he could give Patrick Cutrone his first start of the season.

It worked, as Cutrone scored, assisted Gonzalo Higuain and then Suso curled in a scorcher for the 3-2 victory over Sampdoria.

“Tension is normal when you lose to Inter and then in the Europa League,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia.

“I asked to see 23 rabid dogs today and we added quality to that too. You can’t beat Sampdoria only with grit and we put three goals past them. It was a wonderful game.

“We played 4-4-2, but Suso and Diego Laxalt didn’t move like pure wingers. We did well, made adjustments and put the best team out that we had, considering we lost Bonaventura to injury yesterday.

“I don’t know if it’s the start of a new era, I just have to focus on getting the best out of this team. I realise at this moment the fans, media and club expect a lot from us and from me. I need to keep the squad relaxed and the club is helping me in that sense.

“I have to thank my players for a performance of character and quality. We’ve got to keep working, getting better and enjoying each others’ company.”
