The Rossoneri boss replaced the sacked Vincenzo Montella during the course of last season and steered the San Siro side to a sixth-placed finish in Serie A.

The former midfielder did enough to earn a new, long-term contract with the Diavolo but is not satisfied with his side securing Europa League qualification.

“It has been a very difficult season,” Gattuso reflected. “In the six months I have been here we have shown both good and bad things.

“However, the foundations are there.

“There is a lot to do for next season. We need to reinforce the team, organise our work and talk to the staff.”

Gattuso was asked whether there is anyone in particular he wants to see improve.

“From everyone. Performing well isn’t enough.

“We need to raise the bar from the very first day of pre-season. To do that, we need desire and not to be happy with what we have.

“I expect more from myself and from whoever works with me because we have made some mistakes.

“We need to improve too.”

The Milan boss also stressed the need for his side to be comfortable playing in a number of different formations.

“I think we will start with a four-man defence, but we also need to be able to play with three at the back and a midfield of four.

“That’s what we are working on, it’s right that we have alternative options."
