Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini says sacking Gennaro Gattuso was the most difficult axing of his career.

The former Milan legend was dismissed last week just six games into his Serie B adventure with the Rosanero.

“I was the only loser with Rino,” Zamparini told Tuttosport. “It was a gamble, one I was convinced I would win with him.

“I have sacked a lot of Coaches, but I had never suffered as I did this time. Rino is a great person, I sent him a consolation message and I’ll meet with him soon to re-affirm my respect for him.

“I made the mistake, Gattuso won me over with his determination and ideas, unfortunately the results punished us.

“I already made up my mind to change him after Week 2. We have to win the championship here, there is no time to grow or experiment.

“Gattuso lacked experience during the difficult moments, but he will develop into a great Coach.”

The 2006 World Cup winner was replaced with Beppe Iachini who won his first game in charge, 3-0 against Juve Stabia.

“Iachini has a lot of experience in Serie B,” Zamparini added. “He knows how to read games and how to get the best out of the players available.

“Our squad is clearly better than the rest, Iachini just has to get us playing as a team. I’m sure we’ll be able to see his hand in four or five games.”
