Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini said side will be “young and strong,” while he has called on forward Jeremie Boga to be more a team player.

La Dea finished last in eight place, ending their three-year run in the Champions League and failing to qualify for Europe altogether.

Pundits have suggested this is the end for this group after their incredible run where they competed against sides with wages budgets which dwarfed theirs; while they were even moments away from reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2020 when they conceded two stoppage-time goals.

But Gasperini said he is hoping for a bright future for the club. He told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “In England they don’t sign players above 26-27. We have gone in that direction.

“Getting younger and stronger in general don’t go together unless you sign a young talent or you sign a superstar. It will require more than one window to grow. In the meantime, we will give it our all.”

Boga joined Atalanta on loan with the obligation to sign from Sassuolo before making the move permanent in January with La Dea set to pay the €18 million fee this summer.

Gasperini said the price tag is weighing heavily on Boga and has called on the Ivory Coast international to be more of a team player.

He added: “The issue with Boga is the price. Had he cost what Sassuolo paid we would all be happy.

“He can dribble, accelerate, he has technical quality. But he was signed as a superstar who was going to be decisive. At the moment, he is an individual player and that’s it. But he is young and will learn.”
