Second half goals by Andrea Petagna and Andrea Masiello strengthened La Dea’s grip on seventh place in Serie A – increasing hopes of a second consecutive appearance in the Europa League.

“We have taken a big step, these are difficult matches to interpret,” Gasperini commented.

“We played a good match, congratulations to all of the team.

“We attacked with fluidity against an Udinese team who still played well.

“That’s how these matches are, they are decided by episodes.

“In this period, everyone is giving the maximum. We are playing with great patience.

“There is a great spirit here, a great atmosphere. We will try to go for Europe right until the end.”

With the prestigious Panchina d’Oro award having recently been given to Juventus Coach Max Allegri, Gasperini was asked whether his exploits at Atalanta deserved to be recognised.

“You need to accept the verdict of the people who vote. Allegri deserved it, I am still thankful though.

“I am a little disappointed, but I have already received a lot of gratification in Bergamo.

“I have no envy."
