Roma Coach Rudi Garcia says Ashley Cole should not be blamed for his mistake in the friendly with Manchester City.

The full-back gifted the English Premier League side their second goal in Melbourne, shanking his pass into the path of Kelechi Iheanacho.

“We made an individual mistake on their second goal,” Garcia admitted in his post-match Press conference.

“Then we had to control the ball and chase the game, and they had to defend, but we equalised twice, so the team was mentally strong.

“The pitch wasn’t suitable for a game at this level, we’re in winter and it was difficult to play on. That might explain Cole’s bad pass, but he had a good game and shouldn’t be judged on that.

“It would have been better not have made that mistake, and [Morgan] De Sanctis could have done better, but that can happen.”

It was reported yesterday that the Giallorossi would use today’s match to negotiate with City for Edin Dzeko, but Garcia would not be drawn into commenting on the striker.

“We’ve been very clear, we’re looking for three players in specific roles. Now is not the time to talk about it, but we’re working with [sporting director Walter] Sabatini every day to improve the squad before the start of the season.”

Though he admits he wants to improve his squad, the former Lille Coach also declared himself happy with the attitude of the players who are currently at his disposal.

“I’m happy with the second half,” Garcia explained.

“In the first half we struggled, not only in defende, but the whole team. We defended well against talented players, [David] Silva for example.

“In the first half we struggled with possession, in the second we were level. These results [City and Real Madrid] should give the lads confidence, but we can’t fall into the trap of thinking we’re strong.

“We’re playing these teams to see where we are, don’t forget that City are ahead in their preparations, because they start playing 15 days before us.

“I liked the Australian tour, aside from the quality of the pitches, and had a good time preparing the team.

“I like the attitude of the team, they’re competing well in training. It’s a peaceful working environment, we’re all very calm and that’s how you work well.

“I’m very satisfied with the attitude of the lads.”
