Sassuolo starlet Davide Frattesi reveals that he wanted to return to Roma at all costs and jokes about the future of Gianluca Scamacca: ‘I told him to join a top club…’

The 22-year-old has had a scintillating debut season in Serie A with four goals and three assists in 29 league matches. A product of Roma and Lazio academy, Frattesi is a Giallorossi fan and left the club in 2017 to join Sassuolo.

“I wanted to return at all costs, but there are things you can’t control in football. Roma is always Roma,” he told DAZN.

Frattesi played in the Roma and Lazio youth sectors with Gianluca Scamacca, one of Sassuolo’s stars this season. Both players have been linked with a move to Inter in the summer.

“We always go in the same direction. We joined Lazio together and then I followed him to Rome. I joined Sassuolo when he moved to PSV and now we have reunited again.

“I told him: ‘Gianluca, make sure you join a top club, so I can come with you.’ We think about the same things, we have the same character. Opposites attract in love, but with friends, it’s different. I think I’ve never argued with him in 15 years.

“Sassuolo is the ideal place to grow because there isn’t the same pressure as at a big club. It’s like being in a family. It’s the perfect club to begin a path in Serie A.”

Who is the best midfielder in Serie A?

“I think Barella is a top player in his position, by far the best midfielder in Italy right now. I think he could even score more goals. He has intensity and quality. I’d steal his intensity and eye for the assists. When I am not fully fit, I have cramps after 70 minutes. I need to work on it.”

  1. The fact that Mancini chose Pessina and Cristante over Frattesi and Castrovilli for the WC play-offs blows my mind.
