Paulo Fonseca claims Roma must be strong defensively against Ajax and confirms Jordan Veretout will play.

The Giallorossi are the only Serie A side involved in European competitions as they face Ajax away in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals tomorrow.

“I feel the lads are motivated and confident,” Fonseca said at a press conference.

“We need to put in a perfect performance, under any aspect. Ajax are a strong team. They are similar to Sassuolo for how they build from the back, and we’ll need to be 100 per cent focused.

“It will be crucial not to make any mistake because Ajax are a solid team.

“Offensively, they are among the best teams in Europe. They have strong players, we can’t afford defensive errors, that will be the key.

“They always want to keep the ball possession. We’ll need great defensive performance,” he continued.

“What we do on the pitch matters more than who is the favourite. It will be a challenging game for both them and us. I expect two balanced games.

Is Jordan Veretout available?

“Yes, he will play tomorrow. He’s trained well.”

Does he have any regret, including stripping Edin Dzeko of the captain’s armband?

“It’s easy to say I should have made different choices after a game, but regarding the decisions about the group, I would not change a thing,” Fonseca concluded.
