Paulo Fonseca admits he had to “raise my voice” to wake Roma up halfway through their 3-0 win over Brescia. “We were not aggressive enough.”

The Giallorossi eventually ran riot with Chris Smalling, Gianluca Mancini and Edin Dzeko goals.

“Sometimes you need to raise your voice. In the first half, we had space, but didn’t play with the right tempo, we were not aggressive enough, so we had to change that,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“My approach depends on the situation. At times I get angry in the dressing room, at others I calmly explain to the players both collectively and individually what they need to do.

“We need to improve in every area. It’s true that we won 3-0 today and scored from set plays, but we had other situations where we could’ve had even more goals.”

Lorenzo Pellegrini made his comeback two months after fracturing a bone in his foot.

“It was a good performance on his first game back. I think we found the best balance of the season and defensive comfort with Mancini in midfield. Amadou Diawara and Jordan Veretout are very important players for us too.”

Alessandro Florenzi hadn’t started since October 20, despite impressing on international duty for Italy, as Fonseca said he wasn’t sure about his right-back credentials.

“It was a good game, he can improve when going forward. He can play in various different roles, as a winger or a full-back, it depends on the situation.

“To be honest, I don’t need to explain anything to Florenzi. He understands I make my decisions for the team and he doesn’t require any special treatment. I’ve always talked to him and all the others in the same way.”
