Alessandro Florenzi has called for referees to ‘explain their decisions’ after Milan’s contentious 1-1 draw with Bologna, seeing two penalty appeals rejected.
There were in all three incidents that upset Rossoneri players during the match at the Stadio Dall’Ara.
Fode Ballo-Toure was pulled back in the build-up to the opening Nicola Sansone goal, then Adama Soumaoro seemed to tread on Ante Rebic’s foot in the penalty area.
In the final minutes, the ball struck Jhon Lucumi on an out-stretched arm, but the referee and VAR judged it to be involuntary because it hit another part of his body first.
“I believe the next step has to be allowing referees to explain their decisions after the match,” Florenzi told Sky Sport Italia.
“Look, we all make mistakes, perhaps this would be a good way of helping us understand what a referee is thinking. I believe today the referee could’ve been better helped, especially on the penalty in the first half on Rebic.”
By ‘better helped,’ Florenzi is referring to the VAR, who checked the footage of all these incidents and chose not to recommend any on-field reviews.
The former Roma and Paris Saint-Germain man also admitted that the Rossoneri had taken the wrong approach in Bologna, conceding the opening goal from Sansone within 34 seconds of kick-off.
“There are regrets because we played 89 minutes and not 90. We all played with intensity, but even then, the anger remains over these two very clear penalties.”
