“There were a few things about my performance tonight that didn’t go well. In the first half I wasn’t active enough and struggled to find my position on the field,” he told Rai Sport.

Florenzi was expected to be part of the World Cup squad in Brazil, but Cesare Prandelli cut him from the final list of 23.

“I am truly very happy with this return to the Nazionale. We know players have this as their ultimate ambition and target, it’s what we work towards.

“There was huge disappointment, as everyone dreams of playing in a World Cup. It was a choice and those are accepted.”
