Alessandro Florenzi admits he didn’t think about Milan fans’ boos for Rafael Leao but feels the Portuguese is strong enough to react: ‘He’s our best player.’

Milan secured a vital 1-0 win over Sassuolo at the Stadio Meazza thanks to Christian Pulisic’s sixth Serie A goal this season.

Rossoneri players had gathered in a circle on the pitch after the final whistle and Florenzi explained to DAZN why they did so: “It was for us. To say that every time we leave the pitch with our tongues out, we can have no regrets. Today, everyone gave their all,” said the Italy international.

“It’s a great win in front of our fans. We all wanted it and we knew how important it was for us and our fans who never stopped supporting us today.”

However, not all Milan players received praise as Rafael Leao was booed by a few fans when he was subbed off in the final minutes. What did Florenzi think when he heard Milan supporters jeer their star?

“Do you want to know the truth? I had other things to think about than boos for Leao,” he replied.

“It’s the honest truth. I am sure Rafa has the personality to face these boos which, from the fans’ perspective, were deserved. He has broad shoulders and a team that is ready to support him because he is our best player so that he can turn this boos into applause.”

Coach Stefano Pioli was also under pressure as several reports had claimed the Italian would have been sacked if Milan had lost.

“The coach has enough experience not to be bothered,” said Florenzi.

“The same goes for many experienced players, including myself. Criticism is accepted when it’s constructive. We must be united as a group, as we did today and win games of course.”

So, what’s their target now?

“It’s Cagliari in three days. We must try to give our all and leave the pitch as we did today.”

Milan will host the Sardinians at the Stadio Meazza in a Coppa Italia Round of 16 tie on January 2, 2024.
