The first Serie B game to be officiated by a female referee will be Reggina-Frosinone this weekend, assigned to Maria Marotta.
It is an historic moment for women in the sport, although of course there has already been a woman officiating in the Champions League.
Stephanie Frappart took charge of Juventus 3-0 Dinamo Kiev in December 2020, and before that she was blowing the whistle for the European Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea in September 2019.
Now Marotta will take on the Serie B game between Reggina and Frosinone.
