Fiorentina have announced that four people in the matchday group have tested positive for COVID-19 after the Christmas break, including one player.

Serie A has been taking time off for Christmas and will not resume until January 6, but the players are all returning to work this week for training.

Before they can enter the training ground, they have all provided swabs to be tested, and four in the Fiorentina group came back positive.

A statement notes that three are members of staff and only one is a player.

The Viola do not need to activate COVID protocols and go into a ‘bubble’ because the tests were all performed in isolation and they have not been in contact since last week.

It should therefore not make much difference to the plans of coach Vincenzo Italiano, who can resume training with most of his squad.

The names of the player and members of staff were not confirmed.

The latest wave of cases is being driven by the Omicron variant, which is much more easily transmissible than previous versions of the Coronavirus.

Being vaccinated and having a booster shot does not guarantee you will not contract COVID-19, but it will vastly lower your chances of infection and above all protect you from more serious effects of the illness.

It was inevitable there would be a lot more infections after players visited family for Christmas, in some cases travelling to different countries.
