The news was confirmed this evening by CONI President Giovanni Malagò after a Lega Serie A meeting.

The defender died in his sleep on Sunday, aged just 31, in the team hotel ahead of a planned match against Udinese.

Fiorentina patron Andrea Della Valle announced they had agreed a contract extension that was due to be signed today.

Now, confirmed Malagò, the club will take the sum that had been set aside for that contract and give it to Astori’s family.

However, Fiorentina released a statement calling for "silence and respect, from everyone" – amid creditable sources stating the entire story of donating the salary was a hoax.

He leaves behind a partner, Francesca, and two-year-old daughter Vittoria.

His salary had been €1.3m per year and, although earlier reports suggesting a contract extension was possible anyway, this will be a symbolic gesture rather than an official contract.
