Fiorentina have confirmed the extent of the injury that forced Nico Gonzalez to withdraw from Argentina’s World Cup squad.

The attacking winger was originally named in the group going to Qatar by coach Lionel Scaloni, but had to be cut from the final list due to his fitness levels.

He sustained a new muscular injury during training on international duty.

Tests showed that there is a Grade II lesion to the miotendinal connection of the femoral bicep in his left thigh.

Gonzalez is flying back to Italy in order to begin treatment with the Fiorentina medical staff.

He was not alone, as Inter striker Joaquin Correa was also forced to pull out of the Argentina squad for the World Cup in Qatar just days before the tournament kicks off.

Nico Gonzalez has struggled with injury throughout the season for Fiorentina, so the 24-year-old has made only 10 competitive appearances, still contributing four goals.

He had not played since the 4-3 defeat to Inter on October 22.
