The FIGC has announced that Serie A will end with a playoff-playout scenario if coronavirus stops the season again.

The Federal Council took place this afternoon with all of Italian football’s leading stakeholders, including FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, Lega Serie A chief Paolo Dal Pino and those in charge of Serie B and C.

In an official statement, the FIGC pledged to restructure the format of Italy’s top three leagues for its remaining fixtures if another suspension was imposed.

The planned revision is described as ‘a short playoff and playout stage’, involving the teams competing for top spots and those fighting to avoid relegation in A, B and C.

In the event the campaign is called off completely, the federation states ‘tables will be defined by applying objective correction coefficients’.

The coefficients used will ‘account for the layout of tables and/or the different number of matches played by clubs that, in any case, will provide for promotions and relegations’, although Serie A winners were not mentioned.

As expected, the council also confirmed Serie A, B and C all had until August 20 to be completed, with August 31 the deadline for the Coppa Italia, while the 2020-21 campaign would start on September 1.

However, Serie D, all other non-league competitions and women’s divisions below Serie A have all been abandoned.

Another meeting will be held on May 28 with Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora to decide the fate of 19-20 in Italian football.
