The Italian Federation (FIGC) has introduced stronger sanctions to combat violence against referees, with a minimum two-year ban.

The changes were made after a spate of incidents around the country in the lower divisions.

“For the first time, the FIGC has moved to discipline in detail through the introduction of a specific article in the Code of Justice any violent act towards referees.

“The minimum ban has been significantly raised to one year for violence without need for medical assistance and a minimum of two years for cases that require medical intervention.

“A gap in the Code of Justice has also been filled, covering in minute detail Coaches and directors as well as players, who before had not been expressly included,” read a statement.

New FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said the Federation had “maintained its promise. This is the first step towards the eradication of violence against referees with the rise of sanctions against those who engage in this shameful behaviour.”
