Now news agency Reuters reports that it has seen a letter from FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggesting a new tournament which would take place every October and/or November of every odd year, starting from 2021.

The head of world football’s governing body reportedly stated that “solid and serious” investors were willing to spend around €21bn on the competition and a proposed revamp of the World Club Cup, which would see 24 teams compete.

Under the proposals, the Confederations Cup would be abolished and replaced with the new ‘mini World Cup’, which would run parallel to existing international tournaments.

Reuters states that FIFA “could not immediately be reached for comment”.
