Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero says Walter Zenga’s appointment was ‘an instinctive decision’ and that he ‘didn’t express the same ambitions’.

Zenga was sacked after less than six months as Blucerchiati Coach, to be replaced yesterday by former Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella.

Montella eventually joined after a week of negotiations with the Florence club over his contract, as he was still tied to La Viola for another year.

“I thank Vincenzo from my heart because he is a true talent and after several offers he has chosen with heart, passion and love for these colours,” Ferrero said at today’s Press conference for Montella’s unveiling.

“He refused to go to big clubs all over the world. I have no other words, I’ll just say thank you to Vincenzo.

“I also thank Walter Zenga, I know that maybe it’s not the time but I want to take this opportunity to wish him good luck.

“I must thank the Della Valles, who are people that love sport. It was a week of love, sport, passion and the desire to take a train to Genoa.

“Zenga was an instinctive decision. I understood that Zenga, who is a great person, didn’t have my ambitions or did have them but they were unexpressed.

“I can just say one thing: Many evenings ago I met Vincenzo and he didn’t speak with me. Being affiliated with Fiorentina, he didn’t speak with anyone.

“The fact that Montella is here is a great satisfaction.

“I never talk about money. Everyone was very cooperative, respectful and generous.”
