Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero has confirmed coach Claudio Ranieri will remain in charge of the Blucerchiati. ‘He already had a contract in case of salvation’.

Ranieri was brought in to replace Eusebio Di Francesco, who terminated his contract with Samp by mutual consent after six defeats in the opening seven fixtures of Serie A 2019-20.

The Blucerchiati and Ranieri had an option to terminate the two-year deal early in case of relegation to Serie B this season, but the former Roma coach has brought the Genoa side to safety, currently sitting 15th in the League.

“He already had a contract in case of salvation and will stay with us for another year,” Ferrero told Tuttomercatoweb. “We are talking to check if there are possibilities to extend for an additional year.”

The current situation after the coronavirus pandemic has left Serie A clubs in economic difficulties and Ferrero admitted he will sit down with Ranieri to discuss his contract.

When TMW asked if he would spread the salary over the next two years, the patron replied: “Spread the salary? That’s a bad word, we will sit down and find the best solution for our beloved Sampdoria.

“Ranieri has shown that he loves these colours. Now, I’ll take a few days with my family, to clear my mind.

“When I return, we will sit down, because I want a different championship. I suffered too much.”
