Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero believes Napoli didn’t really want Roberto Soriano – ‘it was a Neapolitan melodrama’.

The Partenopei seemed to be on the verge of securing the Italian international on transfer deadline day, but the paperwork wasn’t completed in time, and the deal collapsed.

“I think [President Aurelio] De Laurentiis is a smart man, if he really wanted a player he’d get him in the summer,” Ferrero told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“He didn’t want him, he was just creating a Neapolitan melodrama. If he really wanted him, the documents wouldn’t have arrived after 11pm.”

Ferrero also discussed the appointment of Vincenzo Montella, and hopes that Napoli will win the Scudetto.

“He didn’t convince me, he was convinced by ‘Massimo the genuine’. I transmit positive energy, the world doesn’t revolve around money, it’s also a world full of love.

“I believe that tenacity, courage and intellectual honesty always win. I consider myself a lucky man, a President of the people.

“Napoli is my dream, I always regret when people speak badly of Naples, Sicily, our south, wanting to put a red mark against it.

“I’d be happy if Napoli win the Scudetto. It’d be good for Aurelio, and I’d also be happy for the Napoli fans, who I love.”
