Uruguayan midfielder Torreira has been heavily linked with Napoli and Inter, among others, with a €50m price-tag.

“Torreira will go wherever he wants, I don’t care, but as usual if you want to buy my players, you’d best bring the money,” the President told Mediaset Premium.

“Many clubs want him, he’s a world class player and we believed in him when nobody knew him. I saw him play for Pescara and told my directors that I wanted him.

“In life you need courage, if it goes well then you’re happy, if not then you try again next time.

“Clubs abroad asked for Torreira too, but this is not the moment to talk about the market. A game is to be played and we want to enjoy it.

“Samp have already made an important step forward and that is clear for all to see. We rebuilt the locker rooms and have 3,000 youth team players on our books, because if you don’t build good stables and have fine horses, there’s no point having the best jockey.”
