Ronaldo will be unveiled as a Juve player next week after his €105m move from Real Madrid was finalised on Tuesday, and Ferrara – part of the last Bianconeri team who won the Champions League in 1996 – had a theory for why ‘the world’s best player’ opted for Turin.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has chosen Juventus and this will be something special for all of Italian football. Now we’re waiting for Messi…” the former Italy defender told Corriere di Torino.

“Ronaldo is an exceptional signing, in every sense of the term. It’s true that he’s not young anymore, but he takes care of every detail and trains constantly.

“Now it is clear that Juve’s primary objective is winning the Champions League. With this coup, Juventus are now among the top five powers in world football because they bought the best player.

“No-one expected it, but I think the deal had been in the works for a while. I’m thinking of Zidane leaving Real and Allegri, who decided to stay at Juve. I think they both knew what was going to happen.”
