Sampdoria Coach Ciro Ferrara reveals he fought for Enzo Maresca and is ready to welcome Angelo Palombo back into the squad.

The Blucerchiati had a sensational start to the season with two victories over Milan and Siena, so they’d be top of the Serie A table if it weren’t for a one-point penalty in the betting scandal.

“Sampdoria are back in the top flight where they belong, as their history is made up of great seasons in Serie A,” Ferrara told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have a lot of faith in the work we are doing with a very young team. They must know there will be less positive times to come and they will be dealt with the same way as these exciting moments.”

Maresca was an impressive summer signing from Malaga, making his return to Italy after several years in Spain and Greece.

“I strongly wanted Maresca here, as I know his qualities both in technical terms and with regards to his experience,” added Ferrara.

Former Italian international midfielder Palombo was frozen out after returning from a loan spell at Inter, but has not been able to find another club.

“Palombo could return and the club is talking to him. At this moment we have eight midfielders. If he wants to put himself at our disposal, then I have no problem with him and will speak to Palombo clearly on the situation.”
