FC Sion have released a statement defending Mario Balotelli after controversy erupted regarding a video of him seemingly staggering out from a nightclub.

The 32-year-old Italian striker joined the Swiss outfit at the end of August, signing a two-year contract after leaving Adana Demirspor in a deal worth around €3m. He’s had a slow start to life in Switzerland, playing only 52 minutes of action in his first two league matches.

Balotelli was instantly thrust in the limelight after a video was posted online showing him being supported by friends after seemingly staggering out of a nightclub in Lausanne.

Sion released a statement today defending Balotelli, suggesting that the controversy has been blown out of proportion.

“We’re happy with the team’s performance since Balotelli’s arrival. Sion regrets that the video has taken on unnecessary and disproportionate proportions that damage the image of our striker.”

Balotelli has not been in training for the last few days, suffering from a bout of bronchitis. He impressed during his one year in Turkey, scoring 19 goals and providing seven assists in 35 appearances.
