Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas underlined the reasons why he decided to sign a two-year contract with Serie B side Como.

The 35-year-old Spaniard became a free agent earlier this summer after his contract expired with Monaco, forcing him to find a new club as he enters the twilight of his career. Fabregas surprised many by moving down to the Italian second division and signing up with Como, whose stadium is on the shores of the idyllic lake.

Speaking to Marca, Fabregas explained why he decided to join Como and how it suits him at this stage in his life and career.

“What convinced me most was the global project they proposed, to continue playing at a good level, to be a shareholder in the club, to live in a very nice city.

“I think my family will be relaxed, it’s close to Switzerland, the children can go to a Swiss school, with a very good education and good foundation. Then I can prepare for a future as a coach.”

Fabregas began to slow down a little after leaving Chelsea in 2019, and he only ever showed glimpses of his best during his three-year spell with Monaco. Last season, the 35-year-old only made five appearances across all competitions for the Principality side, missing the majority of the season due to hamstring and fitness issues, as well as an ankle injury.
