Former Mantova player Marco Sguaitzer has died at the age of 59, a decade after he was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease.

He becomes yet another former professional athlete to have died from the debilitating condition, which breaks down muscles and leaves people paralysed.

Sguaitzer would’ve been 60 on July 4 and was diagnosed with the condition, formally called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, in 2018.

He wrote a book about his experiences with the illness and would give presentations at schools.
