Ex-Italian goalkeeper Giuseppe Taglialatela blames Fiorentina and Napoli for not signing Guglielmo Vicario and predicts Monza’s Michele Di Gregorio will follow a ‘similar’ trajectory in the near future.

Ex-Napoli goalkeeper Taglialatela sees similarities between Monza’s Di Gregorio and Tottenham star Vicario.

During an interview with RadioFirenzeViola on Tuesday, Taglialatela said Fiorentina and Napoli should have signed the ex-Empoli goalkeeper before Tottenham.

Ex Italian keeper identifies the next Vicario

“Fiorentina were wrong to let him go and I had told Napoli to sign him multiple times,” said the 55-year-old. “Di Gregorio can become a similar goalkeeper.

“Fiorentina have always had great strikers and goalkeepers so the club must choose a keeper with broad shoulders.”

Taglialatela is not entirely convinced about Fiorentina’s second-choice keeper, Oliver Christensen. The 25-year-old moved to the Stadio Franchi last summer but has conceded 15 goals in 10 appearances across all competitions this season.

“Currently, he doesn’t have the quality to stay between the Fiorentina sticks,” said Taglialatela.

“Terracciano is ok for now, but the club must take a look around for a top keeper. I’d pick an Italian goalkeeper like Di Gregorio who is ready for a top club.”

Di Gregorio has recently emerged as a transfer target for Juventus and Tuttosport reported in April that Cristiano Giuntoli had met Monza’s Adriano Galliani to discuss a possible transfer for the 26-year-old.

Di Gregorio has conceded 35 goals in 33 appearances this season, keeping 14 clean sheets. Vicario joined Tottenham from Empoli in a €20m deal last summer and made his senior Italy debut in March in a 2-0 win over Ecuador.
