Lazio and Atalanta qualified by the virtue of finishing fifth and fourth in Serie A last season respectively, while Milan demolished Macedonian side Shkendija 7-0 on aggregate in the playoffs.

The Rossoneri last played in the Europa League groups nine years ago, in Carlo Ancelotti’s final season at the helm, and have never won the trophy, neither in its previous guise as the UEFA Cup.

Lazio, meanwhile, reached the last 16 two campaigns ago, while Atalanta made the quarter-finals of the 1991 UEFA Cup, losing to Italian rivals Inter.

The Dea also turned down an invitation to play in the now-defunct Inter-Toto Cup in 2001, which could have led to qualification for the UEFA Cup.
