Samuel Eto’o, the President of the Cameroon Football Federation, doesn’t see why the African Cup of Nations should not go ahead: ‘Euro 2020 was also played during the pandemic.’

The continental tournament will take place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, but there are reports that CAN is considering cancelling this year’s edition due to the rapid increase of the Omicron COVID variant.

Eto’o, a former Barcelona, Inter and Sampdoria striker, has recently been named President of the Cameroon Football Federation and insist the African Cup of Nations will go ahead.

“Why should it be played?” he told Canal Plus.

“The federation that I represent will strongly defend the competition. The Euros were played in the middle of the pandemic with full stadiums. Why shouldn’t we play? We must be clear on this aspect.”
