“It really wasn’t our day,” said the Spaniard. “I saw many of my men clearly playing below their usual levels.

“When we don’t have positive possession or cannot find depth, then it becomes difficult. When you lose, something is always missing. We’re a long way off the consistency we’re looking for.”

“Siena worked well in defence and closed down all of our options. We certainly have to improve in order to win this type of match. I saw the hunger and attitude to do it, but things became more difficult after the penalty.

“We even used Simon Kjaer as a centre-forward at the end, which was a bit of desperation and I don’t like doing this. Besides which, when Simon went up there we barely got a cross into the box. It’s an option for the last five minutes, but I don’t like it.”
