Luis Enrique is “not worried” about Daniele De Rossi’s contract renewal and feels the break was good for Roma ahead of their Chievo comeback.

Negotiations continue to drag on and the midfielder’s current deal expires in June, so he could leave on a free transfer or be sold this month to avoid that fate.

“There are many players who don’t just think about money, but also where they are happy and can do their best work,” said Enrique in today’s Press conference.

“We all know what Roma means for the Romans and that is why I am not worried. He will stay because this is what he wants. At least, that’s what I think… Someone of De Rossi’s level should’ve renewed some time ago, but every day he trains with a smile on his face. Losing him in January is not an option.”

The Christmas break has not been entirely positive for the Giallorossi, who lost Pablo Daniel Osvaldo for two months, sent Marco Borriello to Juventus and saw David Pizarro storm out of training before he was given permission to visit Chile over a personal issue.

“It’s a shame about Daniel’s injury, but these things happen and I have faith in my squad, so have not requested any reinforcements. If anything, we need to chop down the squad. Borriello is a great player, but I made choices that I felt were best for Roma.

“Pizarro is a Roma player, but everyone knows there are rules and therefore consequences when those are not followed. We are a little family. The lad is in Chile now and unfortunately had a personal problem that I hope can be resolved as soon as possible. Then we’ll see what he has to say.”

Roma have been storming up the table in the weeks preceding the break and hope to pick up where they left off against Chievo.

“I think the break did us good. It will be a tough game against a side that plays very solidly in defence and is also dangerous up front. I don’t know how it will go, but I want to win and see a compact Roma.”
