Enner Valencia’s header left Ben Foster stranded, but on 29 minutes the ex-Everton striker got his name on the scoresheet, poking in after a scrappy Rickie Lambert flick.

And it was the Liverpool forward who put England into the lead just after the break – firing in after a great run from Ross Barkley.

With 20 minutes remaining however, Ecuador levelled the encounter as Michael Arroyo hit one into the top right-hand corner of the net.

England now face Honduras on Saturday before flying to Rio in preparation for their first World Cup group match against Italy on June 14.
