There were quite a few errors on show and serious problems in defending against counter-attacks, as after several Meret saves, Cremonese took the lead with a Mariano Arini tap-in.

Mertens was brought down by Claiton and Insigne converted the penalty to equalise, but it was somewhat against the run of play.

After Milik missed a sitter from close range, Arini struck from distance to restore Cremonese’s lead.

Simone Verdi came on for the second half and helped turn things around with his equaliser from the D.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Insigne went close before Amin Younes completed the turnaround to lead 3-2, again on an assist from Verdi.

However, Meret was surprisingly beaten from midfield by a sudden Danilo Soddimo lob that ricocheted in off his body and the crossbar.

New signing Elmas made his debut for the final 25 minutes, having arrived last night following his transfer from Fenerbahce.

Napoli: Meret; Hysaj (Di Lorenzo 46), Manolas (Luperto 46), Chiriches (Maksimovic 46), Ghoulam (Mario Rui 46); Gaetano, Zielinski (Malcuit 46) (Elmas 65); Callejon, Mertens (Verdi 46), Insigne (Younes 63); Milik (Tutino 63)
