The Rossoneri had a mountain to climb after their 2-0 first leg home defeat, while Fabio Borini had to play at right-back due to the absence of Ignazio Abate and Davide Calabria. Gennaro Gattuso unveiled a new 4-4-2 formation with Andre Silva and Patrick Cutrone together, the Portugal international having finally scored his debut Serie A goal at the weekend in a last-gasp victory at Genoa. The Gunners were still without Alexandre Lacazette, Santi Cazorla and cup-tied Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal were back in the squad.

It was almost the perfect start, as within 40 seconds Borini’s cross found Andre Silva and he hit the side-netting. Arsenal then lost Laurent Koscielny after he fell awkwardly on a corner and hurt his back.

The 4-4-2 formation didn’t seem to be working well, as the midfield was too easily over-run. There was a double chance on 25 minutes, as first Cutrone’s diving header was charged down, then immediately Danny Welbeck’s angled drive on the counter was parried at the near post.

Milan did break the deadlock with a spectacular long-range strike from Hakan Calhanoglu, bouncing just in front of David Ospina to fly into the far bottom corner. This was starting to put the pressure on the Gunners and you could only hear the Rossoneri supporters in the crowd.

However, Arsenal were literally gifted an equaliser, because Welbeck was awarded a penalty for an embarrassing dive. He dragged his foot seeking contact with Ricardo Rodriguez and the official behind the line told the referee to whistle. Welbeck converted the ill-gotten spot-kick himself.

Milan had their own penalty appeals for a Calum Chambers handling offence, but it ricocheted off his leg first and could not be considered voluntary.

On the stroke of half-time, Gianluigi Donnarumma did well to beat away a fierce Jack Wilshere effort from the D.

After the restart, Donnarumma denied Mkhitaryan at the near post and on the resulting corner Shkodran Mustafi nodded over.

Suso flashed his shot just wide and Ramsey blasted over on the counter, but Silva had penalty appeals rejected for a slight shove from Bellerin – easily more of a spot-kick than Welbeck, not that it was saying much – and Cutrone’s scissor-kick volley flashed past the post.

Nikola Kalinic came off the bench and almost scored with his first touch, but the header was too weak on a sensational Leonardo Bonucci ball.

Arsenal took the lead with another gift, this time from Donnarumma, who got down far too early and essentially pushed the hopeful Granit Xhaka strike over his prone body into the empty net.

Ospina flew to fingertip a deflected Andre Silva header over the bar and Suso turned wide from the resulting corner.

Donnarumma felt he’d made up for the howler with a save from point-blank range on Ramsey’s header, but could do nothing on the Welbeck follow-up.
