Eusebio Di Francesco concedes Sampdoria were “too scared of Inter” and didn’t make the most of the extra man in a 3-1 defeat.

“When you play against sides like Inter, you know there is a quality gap, but we lost the ball too cheaply and made it easier for them,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We gifted them chances and when that happens you tend to get irritable. We had a good start to the second half and scored to get back into it after the Alexis Sanchez red card, but then made a huge mistake for their third goal.

“I tip my hat to Inter, but we certainly contributed to the defeat with out own errors. Too often, we see that we are too timid and don’t go into the challenges with enough determination. Today, we were too scared of Inter and backed off on the individual duels. I want more fight from my teams.

“I changed the system to take a step towards what these players needed, but we cannot lack determination when playing against 10 men. We had to spread Inter with our passing and then break through.

“Putting crosses into the box against the likes of Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni won’t get you anywhere. We need to raise the quality level here, we are in Serie A.”
