Roma Coach Eusebio Di Francesco says he could “soon switch to 4-2-3-1” as tacticians shouldn’t be “fundamentalists”.

The former Sassuolo boss is known for favouring a 4-3-3, but there have been complaints from sections of the Giallorossi support that he’s too inflexible.

“A coach must be able to convey his ideas and make the player understand that it’s the best choice for him and for the group,” Di Francesco explained at the FIGC-USSI seminar.

“A coach must be able to convey his ideas and make the player understand that it’s the best choice for him and for the group,” Di Francesco explained at the FIGC-USSI seminar.

“I’ve had great masters like [Zdenek] Zeman, but football changes quickly and we can’t be fundamentalists.

“For example, I start from a 4-3-3, but I could change soon and switch to a 4-2-3-1. That doesn’t meaning changing the philosophy though.

“My teams must always be aggressive, look to win the ball high and stay compact at 30-40 metres to deny the opponents space and give ourselves more options in possession.

“If that happens but then – I’m using this name as an example – Daniele De Rossi doesn’t make the right movement it means I did something wrong in training. In training we try to game out every situation.

“Another example would be that I tried zonal marking on set pieces but I saw the lads were having some problems and I overhauled it.

“Now I’m working on it with them because I think we have the characteristics to defend in both ways, depending on the opponent. It’s good to know how to do more things.

“In training we practice shooting, and it’s all about how we practice. A player like [Maxime] Gonalons I certainly won’t ask to shoot from outside the box because he doesn't have those characteristics.

“But [Radja] Nainggolan has them, and he does it. Of course he scored more last year, but that can happen. Chance comes into it too.”
