“We’ll see how he is in training today and discuss the situation with him. As far as I am concerned, whether the psychological focus is on the game or not, he will be called up as part of the squad.”
Their Serie A match is against Atalanta on Monday evening and it remains to be seen if the Dutchman will feature.
“This cannot be more important than the game tomorrow. I can say Strootman has always been considered an important player, the same as the others.
“We have many midfielders at Roma right now, everyone can evaluate it, and I have to focus on the strength of the team overall.”
Strootman had started in the 1-0 win over Torino, so how does he go in a week from first choice to the exit with no option to replace him on the market?
“I made a choice against Torino with many players who deserved to play. I try to make everyone feel important, but at times there are situations that must be viewed from 360 degrees with the player, club and team.
“I haven’t spoken to the player yet, but right now we are talking about something that isn’t definite yet. There are negotiations, it is concrete, but not finalised. At the end of the day, we all have to share decisions.
“I am a Coach and the team comes first and foremost.”
